Ranking Favorite Shows

One of the things that has popped up on Facebook is a list where you can list your favorite television shows and rank them. And being a geeky sort of person, I'm easily seduced by the idea of Making A List. But as I think about it, it's difficult to judge, especially shows-in-progress vs completed-shows.

It's terribly easy for me to say what my favorite show is, after all. And even if you separate old and new Doctor Who into two separate shows, they're both at the top. It's not just another television show, after all, when you've made hundreds of friends and acquaintances because of it. And unlike many shows, I'll watch old episodes at any time.

But really, it is difficult to compare shows-in-progress with shows that are finished. Right now I'm as engaged with Lost and Heroes like I was with Babylon 5 or The X-Files at their peak, and Jekyll is getting the sort of attention that I would have previously given Ultraviolet.

But even as I think Heroes vs Lost discussions are unfair, and I think comparing shows across decades is especially difficult, especially as television productions have matured over the years.

A New Sith, or Revenge of the Hope

I'd recently rewatched Star Wars episodes I - III, and well, this article that has apparently been around for a few years makes a lot of sense.

I-35W bridge collapses

I'm stunned and paying a lot of attention to the I-35W bridge collapse -- this is a bridge that I've literally crossed hundreds of times -- even at that specific time.

While I haven't heard any bad news yet from friends or family, and many of my friends have checked in, it is still one of those things where until everyone I know has checked in, it'll be something to have some worry about.
